The Bernard Frank Collection

The Guimet Museum Presents the Exhibition “Ofuda” Engraved Images from the Temples of Japan

The «Ofuda» project was born when the family of Professor Bernard Frank (1927-1996) entrusted their collection of xylograved pious images, which he had patiently gathered over forty years of wanderings throughout Japan, to the Collège de France and held the Chair of Japanese Civilization since 1979.

The Ofuda Collection

This collection of «Ofuda», rich in more than a thousand specimens, was constituted in a spirit of completeness and encyclopaedic synthesis that cannot fail to evoke the erudite passion with which Emile Guimet, a century earlier, had managed to assemble a collection of Buddhist statues of a quality and consistency that make it unique in the world.
